The bigger-than-Ben-Hur-screen smartphone market is gaining another new model, this time thanks to Samsung, with news the Korean giant is launching the sizeable new Galaxy W. There’s a good list of inclusions to gain some attention, such as a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU delivering up to 1.2GHz of processing power and a cache of 1.5 GB of RAM to play with.
But it’ll be the 720 x 1280-pixel TFT touchscreen panel, measuring 7.0 inches that gains most eyeballs, driven by a Qualcomm Adreno 305 graphics core. It’s just a pity the screen isn’t an AMOLED type.
You’ll see 16GB of on-board flash storage while external space can be had through microSD card, up to 64 GB. Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) gets a run and for power, the device includes a 3200mAh Li-Ion-type battery. But unfortunately, no talk or standby times were available at time of publishing.
Next, wide area network connectivity comes in the form of 802.11 a/b/g/n-standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP covers wireless personal communications. Multi-network support over 2G is handled through the device’s 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz band coverage while for 3G networks, the bands covered are 850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz.
There’s a front-facing 2 MP camera but the device’s best quality photos are captured by the main 8MP (3264 x 2448 pixels) with autofocus image sensor on the back. The device also supports video recording up to 1080p@30fps.
The Samsung Galaxy W measures 191.8 x 99.6 x 8.8 mm and has a comfortable weight (given its size) at 245 grams. The device was announced first in June 2014.
