Any thoughts that Apple would make a budget smartphone have disappeared out the window with the release of the ‘colourful’ Apple iPhone 5c.

Announced overnight, the 5c was the phone originally rumoured to be set for release at $99. If only it were true. The new model features a polycarbonate shell housing a 4-inch Retina display powered by Apple’s A6 processor and new iOS 7 operating system. However, its price tag in Australia of $739 for the 16GB version and $869 for the 32GB model are a real surprise.

In all, aside from the five fruity colours, there are five models of the iPhone 5C covering a myriad of cellular options:

  • Model A1532 (GSM)*:  UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25)

As for general wireless, you get Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi – 802.11ac is conspicuous by its absence.

The four-inch Retina display delivers 1136×640-pixel resolution for 326 pixels per inch density. Contrast ratio is said to be approximately 800:1 while the brightness is rated at 500mcd typical.

The phone comes with two on-board cameras as well – an 8MP iSight camera on the back with auto-focus, five-element lens and tap-to-focus control; plus a second more basic 1.2MP FaceTime camera on the front. The phone can capture 1080p (1920×1080-pixel) video as well as take still shots while video recording. It supports face detection, 3x zoom and video stabilisation. What’s not clear is whether the zoom and stabilisation features are digital or optical.

FaceTime itself gets an overhaul with the ability to make voice-only calls over Wi-Fi or cellular network.

The phone will go on sale in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK on September 20 with pre-ordering to go live on September 13.
