Smartphone maker HTC might be running into turbulence from the storm of Samsung phones on the market, but it looks to have an interesting entry-level phone heading into the UK and other markets shortly in the new HTC Desire 500. Based around Qualcomm’s MSM8225Q quad-core Cortex A5 SoC CPU, the Desire 500 runs a 1.2GHz clock speed and features 1GB of RAM and 4GB of on-board flash, preloaded with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system.
It somewhat disappointingly comes with a basic TFT LCD panel running 480 x 800 pixels resolution within its 4.3-inch frame, which is driven by the Adreno 203 GPU inside the Qualcomm chip.
You’ll also find a microSD card slot, good for up to 64GB per card while power is provided by the 1800mAh Li-Ion battery, able to last up to 435 hours in standby and 12 hours talk time.
There’s decent wireless connectivity here with 802.11 b/g/n on-board plus Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP. Cellular coverage is handled over 2G through its 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz band support and 900 / 2100 MHz bands for 3G networks.
The main image sensor on the back of the device is an 8MP (3264 x 2448 pixels) type with autofocus, while you get a more basic 1.6MP unit on the front for video calls. The device doubles as a videocam with support for up to 720p@30fps.
The HTC Desire 500 measures 131.8 x 66.9 x 9.9 mm and has a comfortable weight at 123 grams. The announcement date for this unit was in August 2013 and is expected to arrive in the UK and other western markets by the end of the month.
