New MK821 TV box mini PC with Android 4.2.2 OS

You’d think given the prevalence of quad-core SoC CPUs that older dual-core models would have started being put out to pasture. Not by a long shot by the looks of it, with this new MK821 TV box mini PC hitting the market.

It features Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system driving Rockchip’s first-generation dual-core RK3066 Cortex A9 SoC CPU with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board flash. Storage can be expanded by SD card, up to 32GB per card and you get three Type-A USB2.0 host ports to play with.

In addition to the HDMI output, you get 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi with an external antenna plus RJ45 wired Fast Ethernet. However, despite the presence of the Bluetooth logo on the top right-hand-corner sticker, there’s nothing in the specifications that suggests this one has Bluetooth of any description on-board.

Still, it’s one of the cheapest TV box mini PCs we’ve seen, selling on Aliexpress for $56 plus shipping.

While the dual-core CPU might date this one a little, at least it comes with the latest Android operating system – although we suspect it won’t be long before we see new Android 4.3 models appear on the market.
