New Rikomagic MK802 IIIS ROM (130722) update adds 5.1-audio output, Android 4.2.2

Mini PC maker Rikomagic has released a new July 2013 ROM update for its dual-core Bluetooth-equipped MK802IIIS mini PC.

The new ROM is marked 20130722 and built on Android 4.2.2. You can download it direct from the Rikomagic website.

According to reports, the firmware has root access and Google Apps (gapps) preinstalled. The only thing missing is SuperSU or Superuser to give you full root access (you can install either of those from the Google Play store).

The official details of the new MK802 IIIS ROM are:
- Build number: MK802IIIS-eng 4.2.2 JDQ39 eng.zs.20130701.170314 test-keys
- Vendor software version: Rikomagic MK802IIIS_R-BOX_ANDROID4.2.2-SDK_V1.0.0

Those who’ve already tried the ROM say that it supports 5.1-channel audio output well, plus Bluetooth/Wi-Fi working as expected. While Plex for Android is reportedly not working as well as it could, Netflix appears to operating, which could be enough to make it worth a try just for that alone.

Instructions for installing the ROM can be found here as well as a link to the Rockchip Batch Tool v1.7 to do the actual flashing inside a Windows PC.

The MK802IIIS is the Bluetooth version of Rikomagic’s first-generation dual-core mini PC based on Rockchip’s RK3066 dual-core Cortex A9 SoC CPU. It comes with 2Gb of DDR3 RAM and 8GB of flash, now updatable to Android 4.2. It also includes a MicroSD card slot, good for cards up to 32GB. Shop around and you can find the MK802IIIS for as little as $50 including shipping from various retailers online.

There are plenty of RK3066-inspired mini PCs on the market but its great to see Rikomagic continuing the support its older models with new ROMs and should be applauded.
