Low-profile VS-ATV-102 TV box comes with dual-core Amlogic CPU

VS-ATV-102Another TV box style mini PC to hit the market recently is the VS-ATV-102, featuring Amlogic’s AML8726-MX dual-core Cortex A9 SoC CPU, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of flash, preloaded with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system.

This unit originally appeared as a single-core release but now comes with the dual-core MX SoC CPU instead. While 4GB of flash isn’t exactly generous, there’s a full-size SD card slot, good for up to 32GB per card and three USB2.0 ports for external devices.

On the back, you get HDMI output and composite AV output via 3.5mm TRRS port. This one also has dual networking options with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and RJ45 Fast Ethernet port. But no Bluetooth unfortunately.

Not the most spectacular-looking unit we’ve seen, it’s still quite slimline in its design and comes with a 12V/1A AC power brick. The bundle also includes HDMI cable and composite AV cable. We found this one going for as little as $72 including shipping on Aliexpress.

While its specs don’t stand out from the competition, Amlogic’s CPUs are often categorised as the best option to run with XBMC as a media centre, the reason being that XBMC doesn’t need an external media player to work correctly on this CPU. So if you’re looking for a good home theatre setup on this side of ‘low cost’, this and other AML8726-MX powered models could well be worth a look, even if they are only dual-core.
