Specifications – Acer Iconia B1-A71 tablet

iconiab1a71The Acer Iconia Tab B1-A71 is one of the cheapest name-brand Android tablets on the market, selling in China with a price of Y699 ($US115). Despite its low price, it has a fair list of features including a MediaTek MTK8317T dual-core SoC chip delivering up to 1.2GHz of processing horsepower.

Inside, there’s a basic TFT capacitive touchscreen panel, measuring 7.0 inches and housing 600 x 1024-pixel resolution, driven by the PowerVR SGX531 graphics engine inside the MTK8317T dual-core chip.

On-board flash provides up to 8GB worth of storage to play with on the basic model, with external storage for larger files available through microSD, up to 32 GB. You’ll find Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) pre-loaded ready to run but no word on any upgrade to Android 4.2. The battery is a comparatively small 2700mAh Lithium-polymer type.

Peripheral connectivity is covered by the MicroUSB USB port, but there’s no HDMI included to connect up your big-screen TV. However, you do get 802.11 b/g/n-standard Wi-Fi to connect you to your home or office network and Bluetooth 4.0 covers wireless personal communications.

A VGA (640×480-pixel) image sensor on the back delivers basic photo quality and you can also capture video with the device at up to VGA resolution.

The Acer Iconia Tab B1-A71 weights in at 320 grams and has external dimensions of 197.4 x 128.5 x 11.3 mm. The product was announced back in January 2013.

Darren, if manufacturers only provide useless marketing hogwash like “TFT capacitive touchscreen panel”, then please call them out for it, by joining others, like Anandtech, who thankfully also are bashing on crappy TN displays for quite some time now.

Therefore the above sentence should read something like this in all similar reports under the same circumstances:

“Inside, there‚Äôs a basic capacitive touchscreen panel, no word if its a crappy TN panel, or what you really want, an IPS or comparable one. So make sure to check thoroughly before deciding to buy one”

If enough popular websites with wide reach call it out clearly, then those manufacturers’ marketing departments soon will feel the need to be more precise, if they in fact are offering better than TN panels.
And if not, then readers are forewarned what to expect, if they decide to purchase one anyway.

Agreed, an I-PS or VA screen would be ideal but I can’t see a name-brand doing one in a Y699/$115 tablet. But yep, will aim to question the panel more from now on.
