ZTE Open, first commercial Firefox OS smartphone onsale tomorrow

zteopenChinese smartphone maker ZTE looks like having the first commercial Firefox OS smartphone onto the market when the ZTE Open hits Telefonica stores in Spain tomorrow for €69.

According to engadget, the phone will also feature €30 of prepaid air time, which makes the phone incredibly cheap.

Firefox is taking on the giants of the smartphone world in Apple and Google with its first operating system but as others have questioned, it’ll be interesting to see if consumers are willing to leave behind the 1.5million combined library of apps in order to try something new.

The ZTE Open is a basic phone using Qualcomm’s 1GHz single-core MSM7225 Cortex A5 processor with a simple 3.5-inch screen featuring 320×480-pixel resolution. The phone is quad-band 2G/3G with dual-band 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 included. It comes with only 256MB of RAM and 512MB of flash storage, but this can be expanded up to 32GB via MicroSD card. ZTE includes a 2GB card for starters.

The on-board battery is a low-capacity 1200mAh Lithium-ion type but there’s no details on how long it will last, talk mode or in standby.

Given the prepaid air time, this is one of the cheapest smartphones on the (Spanish) market. But given the lack of apps initially, it’ll need some sweeteners to get consumers to try it.
