PocketBook launches new SurfPad 2 dual-core Android tablet

E-book reader brand PocketBook has further expanded its range into ‘Android tablet’ territory with the release of its new PocketBook SurfPad 2 model.

The new release is a 7.0-inch tablet with I-PS touchscreen and 1280×800-pixel resolution. The tablet is powered by Rockchip’s original RK3066 dual-core Cortex A9 SoC CPU and includes 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board flash. It’s powered by Google’s Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system.

That storage can be expanded via MicroSD card slot, up to another 32GB per card. While there’s a 3.5mm stereo analog audio output port, there’s no HDMI available. You don’t get any Bluetooth either but it does include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless networking.

Being a E-book brand, PocketBook has also focused on the SurfPad 2′s ability to read e-book formats and here, it does pretty well with (EPUB, PDF , FB2, TXT, HTM, HTML, DOC, DOCX and RTF supported. It can’t read Kindle formats but neither do Kindles read open-source EPUB so all’s fair…

The tablet comes with a 4000mAh Lithium-polymer battery but no word on how long it lasts. It comes with an all-up weight of 300grams, which is reasonable although arguably not as good as the larger Apple iPad mini’s 308 gram weight for its 7.95-inch chassis.

The SurfPad 2 is being distributed through Altech Computers in Australia but no details are available on price at this stage.
