Onda V971S 9.7-inch iPad-like tablet hits the market

ondav971sOnda is one of a number of Chinese-brand tablet makers but it looks to be having a significant tilt at the market with its new low-cost quad-core offering.

The Onda V971S features a 9.7-inch touchscreen TFT panel but with only 1024×768-pixel resolution. It’s powered by Allwinner’s quad-core A31s Soc CPU and accompanied by 1GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board flash storage.

The bonus of using this particularly SoC CPU is its PowerVR SGX544 MP2 GPU core, which should provide superior gaming to the Mali-400 MP4 quad-core engine found in other SoCs.

The Onda V971S isĀ loaded with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and its storage can be expanded by up to another 32GB, thanks to its MicroSD card slot. You get the standard 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless networking but no Bluetooth from the looks of it.

What it does include is a sizeable 8000mAh Lithium-ion battery, one of the largest we’ve seen in a tablet so far. It no doubt helps push the weight out to its 660gram scale-reading.

While the screen is definitely on the low-side for resolution given its size (certainly compared to the iPad’s 2048×1536-pixels at the same size), it’s being sold for just Y799 or around $160, which makes it one of the cheapest quad-core 9.7-inch tablets around.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear this is an I-PS screen either, being listed as ‘TFT’ only. That said, it’ll probably look similar in detail (if not colour accuracy) as the original iPad, which shared the same screen size and resolution.
