The new Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone has been picked up by US carrier AT& T and is up on its website.
The toughened larger-screen model can be had for $US200 upfront on contract or outright for $US595. The main difference with the Active variant of the Galaxy S4 is its water resistance of one metre for up to 30 minutes.
Otherwise, the Samsung I9295 Galaxy S4 Active has a good list of extras under the bonnet, including up to 2 GB of memory to keep things on the boil and a Qualcomm APQ8064T Snapdragon 600 processor powering on with a 1.9GHz CPU clock rate.
Inside, there’s a TFT capacitive touchscreen panel, measuring 5.0 inches and housing 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution, also the 5.0-inch panel has an Adreno 320 core to handle graphics-intensive apps and games.
You’ll see 16 GB (11.2 GB user available) of on-board flash for built-in storage while external storage for larger files is provided by microSD, up to 64 GB. You get the latest version of Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) to run your favourite apps. Looking at the wireless features, personal connectivity comes by way of Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac-standard Wi-Fi will connect you to your home or office network. There’s basic 2G coverage on networks supporting the 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz bands while 3G is covered by 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz bands.
Battery life is decent, thanks to its sizeable 2600mAh Lithium-ion battery, however, unfortunately, talk and standby times are not yet available.
The device delivers high-quality photos, thanks to its 8 MP (3264 x 2448 pixels) with autofocus image sensor on the back and you get a simpler 2 MP camera on the front. The device is also capable of capturing video at up to 1080p@30fps.
