New Samsung Galaxy phone hits India for Rs11,200

fameSamsung has just released a new budget smartphone into the Indian market called the Galaxy Fame.

The Korean giant, after its success with its new flagship Galaxy S4 elsewhere in the world, is looking to further dive into India’s booming telecommunications market with a low-cost option.¬†However, not everyone is impressed with its value – at Rs11,200, it’s not the cheapest phone going around, particularly with quad-core models now selling for under Rs14,000.

The Samsung Galaxy Fame features a single-core Broadcom BCM21564 SoC processor running at 1GHz and features 512MB of RAM and Android 4.1.2 operating system.¬†The panel is a 3.5-inch/800×480-pixel TFT type with capacitive touchscreen.

Samsung has two versions of this phone – the S6810 and S6812 – the latter featuring dual SIM slots.

The battery is a compact 1300mAh Lithium-ion type, good for up to six hours talk time on 3G networks, according to reports via TechTree.

The phone weighs in at 120grams and includes 4GB of internal storage – a MicroSD card slot can expand that to 64GB. The phone supports video capture but only at VGA (640×480-pixels) at 25 frames per second. This is the usual telltale sign of a single-core smartphone. There’s no word on whether it includes USB On-The-Go (OTG) connectivity.

(Note: there are reports that this phone is a dual-core model – however, in terms of the actual processing, we believe it is a single-core only with a separate graphics core, not a second processing core.)

The phone is on sale now, available from retailers such as FlipKart for as low as Rs10,900.

This seems to be a great phone for first time Android users.
