New budget 10-inch tablet to come from Acer

iconiab1The growth in budget big-screen tablets looks set to continue with reports another big-name brand will launch a 10-inch Android tablet at the end of the year.

According to a report from Taiwanese news site digitimes, Acer has just given orders to Compal Electronics to deliver a low-cost 10-inch unit. Compal is said to be the name behind Acer’s Iconia B1 tablet that sells in the US for under $150. That tablet features a smaller seven-inch screen with 1024×600-pixel resolution, powered by MediaTek’s 1.2GHz dual-core MTK8317T processor.

At this stage, there are no details on expected performance but we’d reckon on a similar dual-core CPU arrangement – quad-core CPU prices are not at the level that a 10-inch tablet could hit sub-$200 and a single-core CPU inside a 10-inch tablet doesn’t bear thinking about. It’s current B1 tablet runs Android 4.1 but with Android 5.0 rumoured to be making an appearance at Google’s up-coming Google I/O conference, either Android 4.2 or 5.0 would have to be an option, even in a low-cost model.
